Winter’s Children, by Neery

They looked similar enough to be siblings. All of them were small, skinny, with blond hair and narrow faces. They looked… familiar, looked like… like… Steve Rogers, he thought, but that was absurd. Rogers – Captain America – had been 200 pounds of deadly muscle, nothing at all like these frail little kids.

His head spun dizzily.

Adult, post-WS, kid!fic. The Winter Soldier herding a whole bunch of little Steve clones – this should be utterly ridiculous, instead it hits you right in the feels.

Steve stops and doesn’t know what to do, to say. He wraps his arms around himself like he’s cold. He ignores the lady beside him cursing him for stopping in the middle of the walk. He makes himself move towards Bucky and he stops five feet away. He says, “Hey, Buck.“

Bucky says, "Why didn’t you ever send anyone after me?"

Steve doesn’t say it’s because he was afraid he was going crazy. He tells another truth. "Because you deserve not to be hunted.”

Mature, post-WS, non-AoU-compliant. In which both Steve and Bucky are damaged and made me want to hug them forever, but which still managed to have me laughing out loud several times because of the awesome Avengers characterisations and snappy dialogue. My favourite combination.

The Pros and Cons of Breathing, by moosesquirrelkittenandking

The most disturbing thing was the bullet that had frozen in midair between the man in black and Tony. He stared at it for a long moment. “So that’s it, huh?” he wondered aloud to the still and silent cafe. “Just like that.”

“Not quite, Tony,” a hauntingly familiar voice said from beside him. He jumped, immediately looking to the side. Standing next to him, looking just as he remembered her, was Special Agent Caitlin Todd. Brunette hair hung in her brown eyes, and she smiled up at him. He could smell her. He could hear her breathing. “You look old,” she commented with a smirk.

Teen, AU. “Life Before His Eyes”, DiNozzo-style. This is a great game of “what-if”, with lovely Kate/Tony interactions, even if they’re not the endgame. Also very much enjoyed glimpses into the alternate timeline, which was just different enough from Gibbs’ experience in the episode – excepting the sad lack of Abby/McGee.
