nothing good happens after 2AM – Chapter 1, by cicak – The Pitt (TV) [Archive of Our Own]

“Do you feel it?” Robby asks, direct, and there isn’t alcohol on his breath, which Jack finds surprising. “There is something between us, something I’ve never had with anyone else. I know your footsteps, Doctor Abbot,” he whispers.

“Step, singular,” Jack says, as panic rises in his chest. Robby looks exhausted, wrecked, but God, Jack wishes he was right. Jack has nursed a very manly, very appropriate, but very real crush for a long time, and he’s never got over it. He does watch him. He’s always watched him. “Look, Robby, Michael, Mike,” he starts, because maybe Robby’s just stuck in work-mode, he needs to remember who he is.

Adult, warning for suicidal thoughts, i.e. Robby’s mental breakdown. This covers the next 15 hours, and it’s gorgeous, and painful, and most of all full of so much love for these two beautiful, broken men.

Robby hadn’t come back to himself fully yet, still half-gone, so Jack leaned his forehead against Robby’s and murmured, “We’re okay, man.”

Robby took another breath, but it was shaking, different somehow. The hand at his neck moved up, cupping his jaw, some kind of energy flaring. Robby turned his head toward Jack, breathing against his jaw, a bright bloom of heat that shot straight through him, Jack’s heart suddenly racing. Robby pulled back slightly to look at him, thumb running over his cheek, a new glint in his eyes. The moment held, tension stretching between them, transforming into something Jack recognized: that aching, pulse-pounding moment before a kiss. Sound roared in his ears as that realization landed: Robby wanted to kiss him. And Jack wanted him to.

What the fuck.

Adult, post-season 1. Jack gets injured, Robby freaks out – things change. This is simply delicious, an amazing Abbot POV as he works through his first time being attracted to a man. To Robby.

maybe sorrow was the thing – Chapter 1, by alasse – The Pitt (TV) [Archive of Our Own]

“Robby, you gotta get going, man,” he says, clapping him on the back once he reaches him. “Time to hand over.”

Robby glances up at the board with a worried frown.

“Maybe I should stay,” he says. “It’s been a rough shift so far—Whitaker lost his first patient earlier—and we have a few complicated cases pending.”

Jack meets Dana’s eyes over his shoulder, and Dana shakes her head slightly. So, yes, a rough shift, but nothing out of the ordinary for the Pitt.

Just Robby being Robby.

“You absolutely should not stay,” Jack tells him. “You shouldn’t have been working this shift in the first place, man. Now, I know you don’t want to let Jake down, and I know you’re not insinuating I can’t handle a few complicated cases.”

Robby looks down, then, meets Jack’s eyes. He looks even more tired than in the morning, looks like he’s done a double and not half a shift, and Jack refuses to let it get worse.

“It’ll be okay, Mike,” he says softly. “Trust me.”

Teen. What if Robby had ended up going to Pittfest with Jake after all? This is such a great canon-divergence and an even greater Abbot POV.

Once he opens the door to the roof, Jack approaches the edge with caution, not wanting to startle Robby; he’s prepared to haul him back physically if necessary. But he heaves an audible sigh of relief when he sees Robby leaning on the safe side of the rail, staring across the skyline.

At least Robby hasn’t climbed over the damn barrier this time. Or maybe he’s arrived just in time to stop him. Either way Jack takes the win.

“I thought we were going to stop scaring Dana now that we’re both in therapy,” Jack muses, joining Robby at the railing.

Teen, post-season 1. I fell for The Pitt head over heels – and the friendship between Robby and Jack Abbot is one of my many favourite things about it.
