but sweethearts few, by addandsubtract – Masters of the Air (TV 2024) [Archive of Our Own]

He thinks about it from time to time, but it doesn’t mean anything to him until after he’s enlisted. Well — to be specific, it doesn’t mean anything until he meets Gale. Because John had always assumed the Gale on his arm was a woman — some women spelled it that way, anyhow — and then there’s this quiet guy, skinny, full mouth pursed around a toothpick, and he says, “Name’s Gale Cleven. Pleased to meet you.”

John doesn’t remember what he said, how he introduced himself, if he smiled or frowned or seemed indifferent. He remembers Gale’s hand in his, a firm handshake with a dry palm, callused fingers. The zing of that contact singing through his body, digging its talons into his lungs and bearing down.

Anyone else would’ve stayed away. John’s not that kind, though.

Adult. This is a perfect soulmarks fic – I’ve rarely read one that still includes period-typical homophobia, which lends an extra edge to the relationship. *chef’s kiss*

Nothing But Blue Skies Do I See – Chapter 1, by featherwords – Masters of the Air (TV 2024) [Archive of Our Own]

“Jesus, Buck, Jesus,” he says as soon as he’s righted himself on his knees next to Buck. He grabs Buck’s face between his hands, looking into his eyes, feeling his pulse under his thumb where it’s resting just under his jaw. Alive. Buck’s brow is furrowed and his eyes are squinted while he tries to slip out of his hold but Bucky crushes him in a tight embrace against his chest, ignoring the surprised grunt. His heart’s still hammering in his chest and confusion fogs his head but Buck’s here so it’s okay, it’s okay.

“Alright John,” Buck says, voice muffled by the way Bucky has his face pressed against him. He feels a few gentle pats to his back before there’s a pressure pushing at his shoulders. Bucky lets him pull away, just barely, and says with a hoarse voice, “You were dead.”

Adult. This utterly brilliant groundhog day fic is an amazing Bucky POV. His love for Buck is just beautiful, but I also really enjoy seeing tidbits of the other guys.

ready for a fall, by stereobone – Masters of the Air (TV 2024) [Archive of Our Own]

John can’t stop replaying the incident. The plane fine one moment, then completely out of his control. John fighting against everything to keep the PT-17 from veering off its path. Gale’s face had been neutral, but his hands tightened on the yolk, and afterwards, they shook. Afterwards, John had wanted to hold him. Take Gale’s hands in his own and keep them tucked up until they stopped shaking. He wanted to apologize, tell Gale that he was scared, shit, he’d been so scared, just not for himself. John had been so scared that Gale was going to die that his own life felt secondary. He still feels scared now and can’t even reckon why.

Adult, pre-canon. Finally watched this – and of course I went for the BFF ship. This is a wonderful Bucky POV, and a great first time fic.

The Unexamined Life – Chapter 1, by Alethia – The Pitt (TV) [Archive of Our Own]

Robby hadn’t come back to himself fully yet, still half-gone, so Jack leaned his forehead against Robby’s and murmured, “We’re okay, man.”

Robby took another breath, but it was shaking, different somehow. The hand at his neck moved up, cupping his jaw, some kind of energy flaring. Robby turned his head toward Jack, breathing against his jaw, a bright bloom of heat that shot straight through him, Jack’s heart suddenly racing. Robby pulled back slightly to look at him, thumb running over his cheek, a new glint in his eyes. The moment held, tension stretching between them, transforming into something Jack recognized: that aching, pulse-pounding moment before a kiss. Sound roared in his ears as that realization landed: Robby wanted to kiss him. And Jack wanted him to.

What the fuck.

Adult, post-season 1. Jack gets injured, Robby freaks out – things change. This is simply delicious, an amazing Abbot POV as he works through his first time being attracted to a man. To Robby.

maybe sorrow was the thing – Chapter 1, by alasse – The Pitt (TV) [Archive of Our Own]

“Robby, you gotta get going, man,” he says, clapping him on the back once he reaches him. “Time to hand over.”

Robby glances up at the board with a worried frown.

“Maybe I should stay,” he says. “It’s been a rough shift so far—Whitaker lost his first patient earlier—and we have a few complicated cases pending.”

Jack meets Dana’s eyes over his shoulder, and Dana shakes her head slightly. So, yes, a rough shift, but nothing out of the ordinary for the Pitt.

Just Robby being Robby.

“You absolutely should not stay,” Jack tells him. “You shouldn’t have been working this shift in the first place, man. Now, I know you don’t want to let Jake down, and I know you’re not insinuating I can’t handle a few complicated cases.”

Robby looks down, then, meets Jack’s eyes. He looks even more tired than in the morning, looks like he’s done a double and not half a shift, and Jack refuses to let it get worse.

“It’ll be okay, Mike,” he says softly. “Trust me.”

Teen. What if Robby had ended up going to Pittfest with Jake after all? This is such a great canon-divergence and an even greater Abbot POV.

The Sandwich Means I Love You, by Topaz_Eyes – The Pitt (TV) [Archive of Our Own]

Once he opens the door to the roof, Jack approaches the edge with caution, not wanting to startle Robby; he’s prepared to haul him back physically if necessary. But he heaves an audible sigh of relief when he sees Robby leaning on the safe side of the rail, staring across the skyline.

At least Robby hasn’t climbed over the damn barrier this time. Or maybe he’s arrived just in time to stop him. Either way Jack takes the win.

“I thought we were going to stop scaring Dana now that we’re both in therapy,” Jack muses, joining Robby at the railing.

Teen, post-season 1. I fell for The Pitt head over heels – and the friendship between Robby and Jack Abbot is one of my many favourite things about it.

Hesperocallis, by ambiguously – Star Wars Original Trilogy [Archive of Our Own]

“What do you need from me?”

She gave him a gentle, relieved smile. “The last thing I want is to put you in an awkward position. If there’s someone else?”

“There’s not.” The words spilled out of his mouth too quickly. He ought to have held back and pretended to consider, but he didn’t want to lie to her. The closest thing he had to someone else was the same man Leia spent the rest of her time arguing with, but if Han was tight-lipped about how he might feel about Leia, he was as silent as cold space about reciprocating anything Luke felt. Han was about actions: swooping in to save Luke’s butt, or embracing him like the missing part of his soul. His words were all sarcasm and distance, never opening himself up in case he got hurt, and Luke had learned to live with that.

Leia’s eyes took him in for a long moment. He wondered if Leia saw the words he didn’t say. Then she nodded, to him or to herself.

Adult, canon-divergence. Leia and Luke get engaged for morale purposes. Lovely Luke POV.

With Practice, by ambiguously – Star Wars Original Trilogy [Archive of Our Own]

What Han wanted to do now was grab him by the shoulders and shake him. What he needed to do was break through Luke’s hard-earned Jedi calm and demand what he actually thought, what he really felt. As much as Luke had loved Leia, her choice had become crystal clear by circumstances set into play before they were born. As much as Han and Leia both loved Luke, the wall was built between him and them forever. What Han ached to do was pull him close and kiss him and act like none of this mattered as much as what he felt for Luke and what Leia felt for him just as fervently, like they could work past anything including the accident of the twins’ birth

Adult. After finding out that their twins, Luke pulls away. Han doesn’t like it one bit. This is the perfect post-trilogy OT3 fic.

How can a loser ever win – Chapter 1, by sirona – Captain America (Movies) [Archive of Our Own]

He keeps the leather jacket he stripped off the drug dealer. When he leaves the apartment, he tumbles the lock behind himself. He has no orders to do it, but if he is going to pretend to be a dead man he might as well start by acquiring some mannerisms. It feels like something the man who had looked after Captain Steven Grant Rogers as a child might do.

Then he walks into Manhattan, through the enormous entrance to Stark Tower, between sliding glass panels and into a hall drenched in light.

“Hello,” he says to the woman behind the massive circular desk dominating the lobby. He tries out a smile, encouraged when the woman does not scream and call security, but eyes him speculatively instead. “I am here to see Captain Steven Rogers.”

falling out of love is hard (falling for betrayal is worse) – Chapter 1, by EverythingButTheKitchenSink (ElvisHasLeftTheBuilding) – The Maze Runner (Movies) [Archive of Our Own]

Finally, Newt manages to tear his gaze away from the windows and pins Vince with an unsettlingly intent look. “How did you know my name?” he asks.

“The same reason I knew where to find you.” Vince scrubs a hand down his face, one corner of his mouth ticks up in a half-smile. “An old friend of yours made me promise to get you out.”

Newt looks lost. “An old friend,” he repeats.

“Yeah.” Vince has stopped smiling. “You wouldn’t remember him.”

Teen, AU. Thomas is never sent to the Maze, instead working from the inside. This is a great canon-divergence that doesn’t ignore the importance of Teresa for Thomas.
