Oliver’s eyes were piercing, but his expression and overall body language was quite the contrary. He had mastered the art of looking nonchalant while saying unspeakable things, so it wasn’t hard for him to trick people into thinking he was holding some innocent conversation about the weather, or his book, or his day. When he spoke next, it was with a serene smile on his lips.

“Because all I can think of is taking your clothes off, sitting you on that table and fucking you in front of everyone.”

Elio gulped and looked around. As he predicted, nobody was paying any attention to them, all too involved in their conversations or focused on dessert.

When they see each other again, Oliver and Elio are still drawn to each other, despite all the reasons they shouldn’t be. So they start playing a dangerous game… The tension is delicious (if you can overlook the cheating).

Kirk met Spock’s eyes unobtrusively and flicked a glance at Keth and the other warriors. Spock received the signal loud and clear: Think we can take them? He shook his head infinitesimally.

Kirk glanced away, but not before shooting a disgusted look at Spock.

Fool, Spock thought, you would rather risk your life, and mine, than back down. Anger sparked and flared into life somewhere deep inside him. Ironically, Kirk’s illogical reaction would make it easier for Spock to do what he had to do. Deliberately, Spock released the controls he normally would have used to suppress the anger, and instead allowed it to flare inside him. Distasteful as it was, he would need his quite real anger in order to perform convincingly.

Arthur lowered his voice further, though no one else was near. “Then why did you come to my bed complaining that Roman women couldn’t satisfy you? All their skill and desire bored out of them?” He smiled again, his eyes watching Lancelot’s lithe form move around the enclosure slowly, the horse still keeping his distance. “Though if it’s Roman men that have bored them so, it does beg the question of why it was my bed you came to.”

Oh, this takes me back… The tension between Arthur and Lancelot here is too delicious for words.

Of course we Britons kiss and have a word for it – cusen – but it’s usually used for affection where the mouth is pressed against the head or cheek, usually of a child, but sometimes other family members and occasionally close friends. This touching of mouths together is something new the Romans have introduced, but it’s not a widespread practice even among them – at least in public.

The elder Kirk has naturally expressed satisfaction at the prospect of an extended visit with a brother he sees only rarely, and the rest of the human crew are – as ever – excessively diverted by novelty; but Spock has his own, private reasons for eagerly anticipating the shuttle’s arrival. James T. Kirk’s presence aboard the Enterprise will provide an unprecedented opportunity for Spock to observe the behavior of another pair of adult siblings approximately his own age. The Kirk brothers may prove invaluable as a control group to assess human sibling dynamics, and understand to what degree his relationship with Michael deviates from the mean, due to his mixed heritage and their shared Vulcan upbringing.

This epic slow-burn is everything I could have hoped for in a post!SNW season 1 fic for these characters. Not just Kirk and Spock, but everyone else, too, including Michael Burnham, whose absence makes Spock reevaluate some important things…

Someone has been in his bedroom. Someone who’s hungry. Nothing else is disturbed or missing.

It’s still an intrusion and he’s Captain America. He’s expected to call SHIELD with their forensics. He has deadly enemies, one of them above all others on SHIELD’s wanted list. Yet all Steve can do is stand at the window staring out at what he can see of the city three stories below, his insides knotting up with hope. The files described the Winter Soldier as an expert tracker. If any of Steve’s enemies could find where he lived it would be him.

That should have given Steve twice as much reason to call in SHIELD. The Winter Soldier is out there to kill him and to be in his sights is to die. But he’s Bucky too, in there somewhere, and after all the years they’ve scraped for food together during the Depression, the thought of Bucky out there hungry is too much to stomach.

His arm has slipped around Bucky’s hips in his sleep and after a moment Steve gets what it is this time. Bucky is hard from being pressed so close and the complete ignorance in his face of what a person would do here is awful. The distance HYDRA and their mindwipes carved between them is awful when the Bucky he knew would have turned to him for a kiss and rolled on top of him without a thought. But all that closeness of feeling like one person is buried now under the blankness they left and the grueling struggle to learn how to live his life again.

The truth is that Illya doesn’t pick up on Napoleon’s unconventional preferences until they become mission relevant. Then it’s all ice water in his veins, heat on his cheeks, eyes cast to the splay of his boots on their hotel carpet because he does not want to be caught looking shocked.

It shouldn’t be shocking. So many small, confusing things about Napoleon are making sense now, converging and collecting to form a neat profile in Illya’s mind. Of course, he thinks again. Of course, of course.

I love the characterisations here, how desperate both men are, how afraid and yet unable to stay away.
